Not many people know that Nigeria's former head of state Yakubu Gowon was on the verge of marrying an Igbo lady until the war broke out and "he was forced" by relatives and officers to drop the idea due to the chasm created by the war(they probably feared for his life). Gowon eventually married Victoria during the war in 1969, but not without having a son with Edith. The now 47 year old son was named Jack (from Yakubu) Musa Gowon. When Edith was forced out, Jack lived in Nigeria under the care of his fathers family till Edith returned from United States where she took sojourn and "kidnapped" Jack to live with her. Jack had issues with his father and got disowned at one point. He later became very rich after taking to drug trade. While rich, he reconciled with his father. He got disowned again by his father when he was arrested by the US authorities for drug dealing. He was sentenced to 40years in jail but eventually spent 23 in California prison before recently being released pursuant to a state pardon. While in jail he bagged a degree and has been commended for good behaviour. The case of his mother Edith Ike Okongwu versus Yakubu Gowon on his paternity (his disinheritance) took several years and terminated at the Supreme court of Nigeria. It is a classical case in which several legal principles were enunciated. His mother died while he was in jail. Jack bears a striking resemblance to his father.
