8 Feared Dead in a Fatal Accident on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

 Another fatal accident just happened on the Enugu Onitsha Express way, close to Women Development Center, Awka.

According to report, tragedy struck again in Awka Anambra state capital this evening about 6:35 pm when two trucks collided on a 14 seater commercial bus travelling to Onitsha killing the 14 occupants of the bus.

The ACC OPS of RS53 of Anambra state command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Charles Ezichi on ground could not confirm the number of victims at the spot until he visits Amaku General hospital.

 Reporter counted 8 bodies which appeared lifeless as at the time of this report but could not independently confirm if they were dead or not .

He claimed the command was not the only agency that moved victims dead or alive from the scene and therefore he would answer after confirming from hiopsital officials how many dead was brought in. 

But an eye witnesses said the 14 occupants of the bus were killed, though three may survive if emergency aid administered on them.

The eye witness who did not want to be mentioned said human bodies littered along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway by Women Development Center Mopol Base Agu-Awka scene of the incident before sympathizers and security officials moved the victims to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Awka, AKA Amaku General Hospital Awka. 

One of the  trucks was on its way to Enugu while the other was heading to Onitsha along the commuter bus before recklessness and impatient of one of the trucks resulted in a ghastly accident.

Just fortnight ago at the same axis, six persons were wounded in another multiple accident, involving one articulated vehicle, a motorcycle and five cars at the Agu-Awka portion of Enugu-Awka- Onitsha expressway.

Mr Sunday Ajayi, Anambra Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), said that the wounded persons have been taken to hospital for medical attention.
Ajayi attributed the crash to break failure of the Enugu bound articulated vehicle, carrying petrol.

"The accident was caused by a petrol tanker carrying product to Enugu, it involved five other vehicles and a motorcycle.

"Six persons were injured and they have been rescued and taken to a private hospital, no body died as at the time of rescue," he said.
An eye witness, Mr Festus Uyanna, told newsmen that the accident would have been less grievous if the junction was in good shape.
Uyanna said that the junction has become a regular spot for road traffic accident and called on the Federal Government to rehabilitate the road to reduce the accidents.

The accident occurred at about 4:30p.m. following a break failure by the petrol laden tanker which rammed into other vehicles.
And at the same spot last year, a family from Enugu Ukwu perished there.
