Yemi Adebisi, Lagos
A Nigerian-born artist based in Washington, DC, Victor Ekpuk, came to prominence through his paintings and drawings which reflect indigenous African philosophies of the Nsibidi and uli art forms. Ekpuk re-imagines graphic symbols from diverse cultures to form a personal style of mark-making that results in the interplay of art and writing. His work frequently explores the human condition in society, drawing upon a wide spectrum of meaning that is rooted in African and global contemporary art discourses.
Notable Nigerian artists concluded to analyse the relevance of Ekpuk artistic exploit and its uniqueness in the Nigerian art community.
This panel discussion – in conjunction with his solo exhibition opening on April 2, 2016 in Lagos after a four-month residency with the Arthouse Foundation – explores Ekpuk´s artistic processes and cultural influences.
On the panel are artists and academics Chinwe Uwatse, Jerry Buhari, Kunle Filani as well as publisher/art patron Toyin Akinosho.
This public event, which holds at Goethe-Institut, City Hall, Lagos Island, Lagos by 3p.m today, is part of Arthouse Foundation residency program for which Victor Ekpuk was the first resident.
On the other hand, experts have often said that one of the purposes of art is to bring colour, beauty, passion and intensity to peoples´ lives thereby enriching their experiences and advance critical discourses and engagements on art and its relationship to how people live together. Photography has long been recognised as a visual language in modern times with power to communicate reality and perceptions about human conditions that cannot be communicated in any other way. It has informed, influenced and educated the populace about humanity through its power to report vividly the way people live and also by challenging the way society is run.
The Nlele Institute and VAN Lagos, in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Nigeria explore these highpoints to instill community cohesion with a quarterly visual-leisure event.
The coming back of the programme, Fotoparty, billed to also hold same venue today by 7p.m. will provide a relaxed ambience of visual cocktail, lounge and music with a mixed community and guests.
