Gwen Stefani Says She was 'Channeling God' in New Album

 

 

Gwen Stefani said she was “channeling God” in her newly-released album.

 

Charisma News reports that Stefani’s new album, called This is What the Truth Feels Like, was released on Friday, March 18.

 

Stefani, who is the co-founder and lead singer of the band No Doubt, is also known for her solo hits such as “Hollaback Girl,” and “The Sweet Escape.”

 

Stefani recently discussed her new album and relationship with country singer Blake Shelton in an interview with Refinery29. 

 

Stefani is a voice coach on the show The Voice, along with Shelton. Soon after Stefani’s 13-year marriage with singer Gavin Rossdale fell apart, it was rumored that Stefani and Shelton were in a relationship. Shelton had also recently been through a divorce with fellow country singer Miranda Lambert.

 

Stefani and Shelton have since confirmed that they are dating and Stefani said that Blake’s friendship helped her get through her breakup.

 

"I think that when you go through what I went through, or what I’m still going through, you think you’re hopeless. You don’t know what’s going to happen. You panic. It was a really super-unexpected gift to find a friend, somebody who happened to be going through the exact same thing as me, literally mirroring my experience. I don’t think it’s an accident that that happened. It saved me." 

 

Stefani also shared about the process of making her new album, commenting that her record label said it was too personal because of all the raw emotions she put into it.

 

"Then we wrote a song called "Rocket Ship," said Stefani, “and that's when the label said to me, 'Listen, we think this overall album you're writing is too personal. We don't think people are going to relate. You should just put out an art record.' And I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I'm literally channeling God here. I'm saving my own life with this record and you come and punch me in the face?'"

 

Stefani’s songs are known for being honest portrayals of what she herself is going through. Refinery29 notes that even in the interview she was open and honest:

 

“Talking to Stefani (as we did last week by phone) feels like chatting with a gal pal. She’s funny, frank, and she shares her secrets,” said writer Heather Wood Rudulph.
