Baghdad: At Least 64 Killed in ISIS Car Bombing

 

A car bomb at a Baghdad marketplace detonated Wednesday morning (May 11), killing at least 64 people. CNN reports an addition 87 people were injured in the blast. 

Terror group ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted Shiite Muslims. Terrorists drove a truck packed with explosives to the market and abandoned the vehicle, detonated the bombs when they disappeared into the crowd. 

Karim Salih, a grocer who witnessed the scene, told the Associated Press, “It was such a thunderous explosion that jolted the ground. The force of the explosion threw me for meters away and I lost conscious for a few minutes."

 

USA Today reports Salih was unharmed, but two of his employees were injured. 

According to the BBC, many of the victims were women and children who were inside a beauty salon at the time of the bombing.  

ISIS has claimed responsibility to many similar attacks, including car bombings and suicide bombings. The UN reports that 1,885 civilians were killed in Iraq violence in the first four months of 2016.
