Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican nomination for
president in a 75-minute long keynote address during the fourth and
final day of the 2016 Republican National Convention.
Trump took a more serious tone in his speech than he has been known
for. Many noted that he appeared perhaps the most presidential he has
yet been. He detailed the struggles America is facing, including
terrorism, racial tension, and other national crises.
FoxNews.com reports that Trump vowed to defend Americans who feel like they no longer have a voice in government:
“Every day I wake up determined to deliver for the people I have met
all across this nation that have been ignored, neglected and abandoned. …
These are people who work hard but no longer have a voice,” Trump said.
“I am your voice.”
Trump added that, if elected, he will seek to restore law and order to America:
“America will finally wake up in a country where the laws of the United
States are enforced,” he said, adding that he will tackle the issues of
terrorism, violence against police, inner-city crime, and “chaos in our
communities.”
Trump faced a great amount of pressure going into his nomination
acceptance speech because, although many in the Republican Party have
rallied around him, many still remain skeptical. FoxNews.com notes that
his speech was the longest nomination acceptance speech since 1972,
perhaps underscoring the fact that he wanted to make a full appeal to
the American people.
Trump was also helped by recently chosen VP running mate Mike Pence’s
speech on Wednesday, as well as daughter Ivanka’s speech, in which she
introduced him Thursday evening. Many political commentators believe the
well-spoken, entrepreneurial Ivanka may be a key factor in winning
younger women over to Trump.
Overall, Trump's speech seemed to have been well-received. Enthusiastic outbursts of "U-S-A" even broke out while he spoke.
