The Week: Pat Robertson Should Retire

A column in The Week report has it thus: This man is Christianity's crazy uncle, Pat Robertson. He was once an influential televangelist and powerful leader of the religious right, but in recent years, he's used his 700 Club television show to spout extreme rhetoric, peddle bizarre prophecies, and fling insensitive comments. He has tarnished his reputation, diminished his influence, and embarrassed his fellow Christians. He needs to step down.

 

According to a column in The Week, conservative Christian leader Pat Robertson “needs to step down.”
The column notes that Robertson was a leader of the conservative Christian movement and the Moral Majority in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, but he has since resorted to making unsubstantiated claims and promoting conspiracy theories.
He can now be viewed as “Christianity’s crazy uncle,” according to the column.
In addition to being a leader of the Moral Majority, Robertson founded the Christian Broadcasting Network and its featured show, The 700 Club.
However, in recent years, Robertson has used the “show to spout extreme rhetoric, peddle bizarre prophecies, and fling insensitive comments. He has tarnished his reputation, diminished his influence, and embarrassed his fellow Christians.”

Robertson has also dismissed the sexually aggressive comments of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as simply “macho” talk.
Other questionable comments Robertson has made include his assertion that husbands are justified in divorcing their wives if the wife has Alzheimer’s disease, that gay people in San Francisco were using special rings to cut people and spread AIDS, that demons could attach themselves to material objects, and that 9/11 happened as a result of God’s wrath against America’s acceptance of homosexuality.
