It was a shocking sight to behold as a group of Okada riders
descended on a student from top Kenyan university and beat him to coma
for sleeping with their colleague's wife. The incident which happened on
Thursday forced the school, Maasai Mara University to close down indefinitely.
According to The Kenyans,
Maasai Mara University’s main campus was closed as a result of violence
that escalated after students staged violent protests calling for the
Okada riders to be arrested for assaulting their colleague who had been
admitted to the Narok County Referral Hospital.
In anger, the enraged students barricaded Narok-Bomet road at the
junction to the university and destroyed some of the property in the
area.
Policemen had to come in and contain the situation as some of the
students were arrested alongside the troublesome Okada operators.
In order to curtail the tension, the school administration, through
the Registrar of Academic Affairs, Dr Otieno Fredrick Onyango, issued a
memo announcing the immediate closure of the institution till further
notice.
"Following the students' unrest during which one of them was
injured on the night of November 16 outside the campus, the senate in
its sitting has authorised the indefinite closure of the university with
immediate effect," read the memo in part.
Learning in the satellite campuses is, however, expected to continue uninterrupted.
