The Federal Government has explained why it sent naval ship to Gambia following the political crisis in the country.
President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Relations
& Diaspora, Abike Dabiri has explained that Nigeria did not send any
war ship to Gambia to oust President Yahya Jammeh as being reported in the media.
A clarification posted on her Twitter page revealed that the Naval
ship was sent to Gambia to assist stranded Nigerians should anything go
wrong in the country.
"The Naval ship that left for Gambia will be on standby for evacuation" she wrote.
She also denied reports that Nigeria is preparing to attack Gambia
in order to remove Jammeh who has refused to relinquish power after
losing the Presidential election in December to Adama Barrow.
"The ship is not a war ship . It's on stand by to evacuate Nigerians if need be. So MFA correct. Huge difference!" Dabiri added.
